Bangkok Travel Guide 2026: Temples, Street Food & Nightlife

Bangkok

Why Bangkok in 2026?

Bangkok is the world's most-visited city for a reason — ornate temples, world-famous street food, legendary nightlife, and a cost of living so low you'll wonder why you ever pay $15 for a meal at home. The new Orange Line metro expansion in 2026 makes getting around even easier.

Essential Temples

  • Wat Phra Kaew & Grand Palace — Thailand's holiest temple and the former royal residence. Dress code enforced (cover shoulders and knees). Go at opening time (8:30am).
  • Wat Pho — Home to the 46-meter Reclining Buddha. Also the birthplace of Thai massage — get one on-site for ฿260 ($7).
  • Wat Arun — The Temple of Dawn across the river. Climb the central prang for panoramic views. Best photographed from the Wat Pho side at sunset.
  • Wat Saket (Golden Mount) — 344 steps to the top. Peaceful hilltop temple with 360° city views and zero crowds.

Street Food Guide

  • Yaowarat (Chinatown) — The ultimate street food corridor. Grilled seafood, pad thai, mango sticky rice. Peak action 6-10pm.
  • Or Tor Kor Market — Bangkok's finest market. Premium Thai fruits, curries, and the famous 1-star Michelin pad thai across the road.
  • Khao San Road — Touristy but fun. Pad thai from ฿40 ($1.10), fresh fruit shakes, scorpion-on-a-stick if you dare.
  • Soi 38 (Sukhumvit) — Late-night street food. Outstanding boat noodles and coconut ice cream.

Pro tip: Look for stalls with long queues of Thai locals — that's where the best food is.

Nightlife Highlights

  • Rooftop bars — Sky Bar (Lebua), Octave (Marriott), Vertigo (Banyan Tree). Smart dress required.
  • Khao San Road — Backpacker party strip. Cheap buckets, live music, open late.
  • Sukhumvit Soi 11 — Craft cocktail bars and clubs. More upscale than Khao San.
  • Talad Rot Fai (Train Market) — Night market with vintage shops, street food, and live music. Ratchada location open Thu-Sun.
